Glad to see they don’t burn the losing Super Bowl team’s merchandise.

The international humanitarian aid group collects the unwanted items over the days following the game at their distribution center in Pittsburgh, then ships it overseas to people living in disaster areas and impoverished nations.

It’s like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it.

Dangers of Fracking

· ·

If you are using a modern browser, check this site out. Not only is it rich in information, it’s rich in web design.

Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.

Andy Gabrielson Killed

· ·

msnbc.com:

Storm chaser Andy Gabrielson survived the hunt for tornadoes for more than 10 years, but driving home Saturday afternoon after two days of chasing storms in north Texas, he could not avoid a wrong-way driver on an Oklahoma highway

I did not know Andy personally, but I had certainly heard of him. Everything pointed to Andy being a great chaser and an equally great guy. It is a tragedy that a three-year old daughter is left fatherless because of a drunk driver.

iPad: iMovie vs Avid Studio

· ·

Leanna Lofte, iMore:

Apple and Avid have been battling it out on the big screen for years, but now they’ve brought the video editing battle to the iPad — and the winner may not be who you think.

In the past five years, Apple hasn’t committed many missteps. Final Cut Pro X for the Mac is an exception. David Pogue - one of the most prominent pro-Apple tech columnists - summed up his opinion:

But — and let me be clear on this point — I think Apple blew it.

Despite recent updates that addressed several of the problems, some studios are now switching back to Avid. Couple that with Lofte’s report that Avid for iPad is far better than iMovie, and all of a sudden Apple seems in danger of losing the important pro market that helped carry the company during its down years. Though, with iPhone comprising the largest share of Apple’s business, maybe they don’t care anymore.

Gingrich In Space

· ·

You might remember Newt Gingrich’s recent proposal for a moon colony if he were to become President. Robert Wright of The Atlantic recalls an article written in 1995 . In short, Newt has a long history of grandiose space plans.

The point here isn’t that Gingrich will now waste tons on technology. The current political climate will restrain this tendency. The point is that—in case you hadn’t noticed—there is little careful thought underpinning his enthusiasms, nothing solid beneath his unshakable self-assurance and his intense disdain for disagreement.

To My Old Master

· ·

A compelling letter from a former slave in response to a request from his former owner to return to work. I found the third paragraph to be particularly amazing. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me.

From your old servant,

Jourdon Anderson.

Once you’ve read it, check out the follow-up on Jourdon Anderson by Kottke.

Occupy Android

· ·

Vincent Messina:

That’s right, Ice Cream Sandwich now occupies 1% of Android devices according to this month’s Android Platform Distribution chart.

It probably shouldn’t be surprising that the latest Android OS is only on 1% of devices after a few months. After all, phone owners are not Google’s Android customers. Those would be the phone manufacturers - and they don’t care unless you are buying a new phone.

Don’t worry. I’m sure the update will be pushed out “soon.”
